The Science of Sleeping Nude
By Dr. Daniel Rocha, DN LMT CPT, CNS
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven hours of sleep each night can prevent sleep deprivation, which is a significant problem that can negatively impact health, such as increasing the risk of heart disease and diabetes, among other issues. So, what does it take to sleep comfortably while improving one’s health?
Researchers have studied the benefits of sleeping nude, as it positively affects sleep. Let’s go over a few of these benefits because if sleeping nude helps you receive the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night, then it’s worth trying. Some research suggests that sleeping in the buff may also positively impact reproductive health, connection with a partner, and self-esteem.
Improved Sleep
The body is regulated by the circadian rhythm, which cycles through heating and cooling patterns throughout the day. As we begin to feel tired at the end of the day, melatonin production increases, and the body’s core temperature decreases, continuing throughout the night.
Optimal room temperature for sleep ranges from 66 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and is key to sleeping well. If you do not think becoming too warm at night interferes with sleep, ask a woman going through menopause. For this reason, sleeping nude can keep the body cooler, helping you fall asleep faster and promoting better sleep. Researchers discovered that those who slept semi-nude with inadequate covering were more susceptible to temperature changes. So, advice: spend a little extra on good bed sheets if you’re going to sleep all natural.
Improved Women’s Health
Sleeping nude has been shown to limit Candida yeast from flourishing in the vagina, which causes a yeast infection, inflaming the mucous membrane of the vagina, causing pain and itching. The risk of yeast infections increases with inadequate air circulation caused by tight or synthetic underwear. It is advised to avoid tight or ill-fitting underwear while sleeping for better vaginal health.
Improved Skin Health
Sleep impacts the skin’s health and appearance. Fatigued and a lack of sleep can cause the skin to be susceptible to wrinkles, drooping, swelling, and dark circles under your eyes. Delayed or reduced sleep impacts the skin’s ability to heal from wounds, like cuts or blisters. If sleeping nude improves one’s sleep, then it will also improve skin health. Increased sleep gives the skin time to regenerate and repair, improving appearance.
Improved Connection in Relationships
Sleeping nude next to your partner increases feelings of fulfillment and connection between couples. It’s called snuggle time. Partners who spend time snuggling skin-to-skin feel less stressed and closer to their partners. Skin-to-skin contact releases the hormone oxytocin, the feel-good hormone that promotes feelings of safety and love while reducing anxiety. Sleeping nude with a partner promotes a healthier body image while increasing self-esteem.
So there you have it, some ideas and concepts to ponder if you do not sleep very well or continuously have women's health concerns. It costs you nothing and might improve your relationship. Sleep is such an important aspect for improved health, lower stress, and physical recovery. Check out my other articles on quality sleep under my blog section on my website.
